Iron Seas  is a working title for a project to create a GAME based on the heyday of the Dreadnought battleship - the Great War of 1914-18.

It's an independant spinoff from the Sealords Project ( link here) which sought to develop a game  from the ground up including its own custom game engine. After two years of development Sealords was reluctantly shelved when it was judged too ambitious.

Iron Seas takes a more simplistic and pragmatic approach to game creation by modding an existing game  -  Destroyer Command (TM Ubisoft). However Iron Seas is able to draw on much of the experience and some of the art assets that were a part of the Sealords Project.

Clearly the mod approach needs to manage the limitations of an existing game, including  game bugs, undesireable hard cored features and less than cutting edge graphics. However,  Destroyer Command was chosen because it has a generously open file structure, and many game features not found in other titles ( here).

At the outset it was decided that Iron Seas would not be the last word in hard core realism. Fully featured hard core sims are the most difficult and time consumimg of PC games that any group or company can attempt. Iron Seas is being developed as a fun game that is reality based, but without all the bells and whistles that would make it a true sim. It will be on ongoing project that will be made available in stages as free downloads.
